Do I need to say more?

How to make your child a false convert.

How to know if you're a false convert.

Rob who?

Friends, Family and all readers.

The time has come for me to officially expose (Eph 5:11, Gal 6:1,2) Rob Bell for his false teachings. If you look on my list of "Problematic Teachers" his name is there; however now is the time to take it a little deeper than just having him on a list. There are a lot of people who follow him, listen to him and a truly lead astray by his books, nooma videos and sermons. People always ask me,
"why don't you like Rob Bell?"
or "What's wrong with Rob Bell?"
or they will say things like, "Yeah I don't like everything he says, but some of it is good."
or "Its true some of the stuff he says is wrong, but he gives an interesting perspective on God."
The first question I would like to answer, which some of you maybe be asking is this: "Why write an article exposing Rob Bell?" or better said "Why expose, talk about or confront false teachers?" My first and gut response is, that the Bible calls us to expose false teachers.
Ephesians 5:8-12
"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret."
And secondly Jesus did it. How many of you have read the gospel of Matthew Chapter 23? I have bolded the text which I would suggest reading. In all reality I would suggest reading the whole chapter, but for time sake, the bolded words will do.
Matthew 23
"Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.’ Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.’ Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’
“Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt. Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’”
Here you can see our Lord is first speaking to in verse one: "Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples" and what does He do? He warns them not to follow the scribes and Pharisees. He then goes on and speaks directly to them say "woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" So not only does He tell the people not to follow them, He proceeds to tear them apart in front of the crowed!
So, why expose false teachers:
one the Bible commands it in Ephesians 5
two our Lord Jesus does it in Matthew 23.
Certainly there are more passages in scripture that speak to this topic, however these two will do fine for our purposes'.
Now, personally I don't like to always read long articles. and because I know some of you are like me, I'll put exposing Mr. Bell on hold and stop with the reasons why to expose him. My next post will be truly exposing his teachings. Please note this is not an attack on him as a person, it's on his teachings.

future men

Over the past, well, twenty years of my life I have noticed something. I noticed something that drastically needs to change about the boys of America. We will talk about that a little later; however I would like to bring up this simple fact: our boys will be men one day. Or put in other words, our boys are future men. So right now it would be appropriate for you to think about all the boys you know. Ponder and think about the boys you know that are under the age of 21... What did you think about them? Would you want to see them as fathers raising kids? Would you want to see them as managers running business's? Would you like to see them politicians running the country? How about husbands to their wives? The truth is, when I think and ponder about most of the boys, tears begin to fall. Sadly its true, all the boys you and I thought of will be men one day.
The past years those boys have been growing up into men and look at our society now. This is one of my passions and there is no doubt I could preach for days. Now before I started reading this book my passion for it was strong. This book took the words right out of my mouth, and with more eloquence. I have been reading a book called "Future Men" by Douglas Wilson. If you are a male and a christian you must pick up this book and read it.
I want to share with you a few thoughts from the book. Chapter one is called "The Shape of Masculinity" and it's all about men's role in this world. There are five roles men are supposed to fill and be. I will tell you the five, and then in another post expound on one of them.

The five: lords, husbandmen, saviors, sages and glory-bearers.

Those five give you a Biblical shape to masculinity. It will be my joy to talk about this further a little later on. Just know, boys, those five are for you to walk out and will bring you into the man God wants you to be. Boys, search the Bible for who God wants you to be, read proverbs...a lot!

I love you guys! : )

Random thoughts about the law from Johnny Mac-

God’s grace cannot be faithfully preached to unbelievers until the law is preached, and man’s corrupt nature is exposed. It is impossible for a person to fully realize his need for God’s grace until he sees how terribly he has failed the standards of God’s law.

the gospel is the power of God

How do you read Romans 1:16?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes . . . Romans 1:16

How you read Romans 1:16 tells a lot about you. Which of the following best resembles how you interpret the text?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel (the death burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior), for it (the preaching of that gospel and absolutely nothing else) is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (not a superficial shallow mental ascent, but a complete dependence and trust upon Christ) . . .

- Christian

For I am not ashamed of the gifts of the spirit, for they are proof of the power of God and proof of your salvation to everyone who believes . . .

-Charismaniac

For I am not ashamed of pleading for money, for sowing your faith seed offering is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes . . .

-Word of Faith Charismaniac

For I am not ashamed of Mary, the Pope, and the Mother Church, for they are the power of God and the only way to salvation to everyone who believes and receives the sacraments, attends meritorious masses, is baptized, keeps the law, does good works, purchases indulgences, endures purgatory, etc. . . .

- Roman Catholic

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of the New Earth that we peddle door to door, for the Watchtower is the only ones who speak for God and is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes and exhaustively works their tails off for the Watchtower almost every waking hour of the day for their entire life to obtain Jehovah’s favor, which is not guaranteed . . .

- Jehovah’ Witness

For I am not ashamed of the restored gospel, even though I am ashamed and embarrassed about our church history and the things our church prophets have said (that was just their opinion and they were not speaking for God when they said all those awful things) for the Melchizadek Priesthood which only we have is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes and follows the following conditions as outlined in Gospel Principles pages 303-304 (1997 edition): 1.) We must be baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. 2.) We must receive the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. 3.) We must receive the temple endowment. 4.) We must be married for time and eternity. In addition to receiving the required ordinances, the Lord commands all of us to– 1. Love and worship God. 2. Love our neighbor. 3. Repent of our wrongdoings. 4. Live the law of chastity. 5. Pay honest tithes and offerings. 6. Be honest in our dealings with others and with the Lord. 7. Speak the truth always. 8. Obey the Word of Wisdom. 9. Search out our kindred dead and perform the saving ordinances of the gospel for them. 10. Keep the Sabbath day holy. 11. Attend our Church meetings as regularly as possible so we can renew our baptismal covenants by partaking of the sacrament. 12. Love our family members and strengthen them in the ways of the Lord. 13. Have family and individual prayers every day. 14. Honor our parents. 15. Teach the gospel to others by word and example. 16. Study the scriptures. 17. Listen to and obey the inspired words of the prophets of the Lord. Finally, each of us needs to receive the Holy Ghost and learn to follow his direction in our individual lives.

- Mormon

For I am not ashamed of the value found in all religions regardless of whether or not they conflict with one another on core issues , for whatever truth is for you, it is the power of God, gods, goddess, no god, or whatever you believe for a better world to everyone who believes or chooses not to believe . . .

- Universalist Unitarian

For I am not ashamed of shameless church marketing, for the end justifies the means and pragmatism is the power of God for filling seats on Sundays to watch our awesome worship rock band followed by our hip and and oh, so cool pastor and we’re also giving away free gas cards to everyone who attends our local campus . . .

- Seeker-Friendly

For I am not ashamed of supporting any socialist cause or liberal issue, for a woman’s right to choose and a homosexual’s right to marry is the power of self-empowerment for salvation from the oppressive chains that the white, Anglo-Saxon, Capitalist, fascists have placed on the backs of everyone in this nation . . .

- Liberal

what do you believe.

Friends and Family,

I would like to introduce you to:

T.U.L.I.P.
The best doctrines you will ever know or embrace - all of grace. They speak of God's infinite Love and Mercy to His people.

There are two views concerning the Gospel of Jesus Christ. First, there is what we call Calvinism. Then, there are varying degrees of unbelief.

The essential doctrines concerning salvation, which the Puritans and all good Christians cling to, are summed up in the acronym T.U.L.I.P.

Total Depravity

Unconditional Election

Limited Atonement

Irresistible Grace

Perseverance Of The Saints

If you have never heard of TULIP or Calvinism or Doctrines of Grace and your interesting in knowing more, here are five hours worth of teach that would be a GREAT introduction. I know it's long and I know not many people would be interested in hearing them...but believe me, it's worth it. Here is the intro to what you are about to listen to:

THEOLOGY TALK - Hosted by Jim McClarty & Jeff Young

In our inaugural Theology Talk, Jim is joined by Jeff Young, GCA president, to discuss a recent
anti-Calvinist message, preached by Pastor Brady Cooper at the New Vision Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, TN. Jim and Jeff carefully and respectfully point out the assumptions, misrepresentations, and "straw man arguments" that are typical of the Arminian approach to Scripture. It is our intention to utilize this informal discussion format to produce other Theology Talk programs in the future covering a wide variety of topics.

Part Five

If you do listen to all five of these, tell me! I want to know your thoughts. Please leave me a comment or send me an email. z00King@gmail.com

home sweet home

Hello Friends and Family!

Well thanks giving break has started and after fifteen hours worth or driving I'm home sweet home. Meloine and I have travled with Mathew H all the way to AZ. It was my fourth time making the drive and I must say this time felt like the shortest. But I'm really excited to read the book Future Men by Douglas Wilson. Leadership at the HA suggested I read it, so I'm reading it. Man, no joke, this book looks like a biblical Wild at Heart. Douglas Wilson is very reformed and and I have not yet read a book, thats not manily focused on theology by anyone reformed. I started reading it online with Google books; however I would much rather read the book then read it online. So here we go! I'll update you on my thoughts on the book, but just know...it's going to be great!

Have a great thanks giving!

Do you contend for the faith?

Every Christian should defend and contend for the Christian faith.

When was the last time you did? What did you defend? What lie did you stop? What wolf did you expose? What doctrines of devils did you deny? What heretical book have you told someone to stop reading? When was the last time a false teacher has caused a holy anger to arise, because they pervert the truth of the gospel?

Every Christian should defend and contend for the Christian faith.

Keep A Pure Conscience

The Christian can say, "I know from the Word that the repentant, believing sinner will be saved; my conscience shows me that I repent and believe. And although I am unworthy, I can firmly hope that I shall be saved." And as forcefully as the Christan agrees with God's truth and repents, so his hope will be - strong or weak. If his assent to the truth so the promise is weak, or his evidence of faith and repentance is un-certain, his hope that is born of these will inherit its parents' infirmities.

Living godly in this present world and "looking for that blessed hope" are joined together (Titus 2:12-13). Thus a soul void of godliness must be destitute of all true hope, and the godly person who is careless in his holy walk will soon find his hope faltering.

All sin brings trembling fears and shakiness of heart to the person who tampers with it. But sins which are deliberately committed are the Christian's hope as poison is to his body, which eventually drinks it up. Sins produce lifeless Christian and make thoughts of God dreadful to him: "I remembered God, and was troubled" (Psalm 77:3). They make the man afraid to look on the God of judgment. After all, does the servant want his master to come home and find him drunk?

When Calvin's friends tried to persuade him to give up his night studies, he asked if they wanted his Lord to come and find him idle. God forbid that death should find you lying in the puddle of some sin unconfessed and unrepented of! Can your hope then carry you to eternity with joy? Can bird fly with a broken wing? Faith and a good conscience are the two wings of hope. If you have wounded your conscience by sin, renew your repentance so that you may act in faith for the forgiveness of it and redeem your hope.

Am I growing in holiness?

The person who loves you most will tell you the most truth. One of the greatest distinguishing marks of a false prophet is that he will always tell you what you want to hear, he will never rain on your parade, he will get you clapping, he will get you jumping, he will make you dizzy, he will keep you entertained, and he will present a Christianity to you that will make your church look like a Six Flags over Jesus. And keep you so entertained you are never addressed with great issues such as these:

Is God working in my life?

Am I growing in holiness?

Have I truly been born again?

Shai Linne

What's your Proof?

verse 1: Can you imagine the reaction/ of seein' lightning without hearin' thunder clappin'/ ayo it's kinda like a tree that casts no shadow/ or light comin' out through a black hole// it's impossible right/ like God's truth without proof, the words that the prophets write/ no contradictions, all predictions/ came to pass in the pass provin' the future ones non-fiction// God makes faith solid/ it's not a blind leap, it's an anchor attached to a rock, it's/ God promise on top of an oath/ the evidence of the things unseen the substance of hope// provable and immutable/ absolute truth as usual it's still irrefutable/ God's perspective the true objective/ no other document should be as highly respected// in a world of opinions/ skepticism, false doctrine and lots of religions/ God's givin the Christian/ the sword to make division between fact and fiction// spiritual wisdom, placed in a judge's position/ held accountable for decisions/ it's kinda like the great commission/ authority passes by faith when the Spirit is given// call it inherited discernment/ the reason the heathens read it but they still can't learn it/ the word of God is hard to/ learn but a lot harder when you don't know the author// If you do then it's cool listen to/ what I spit you, there's two points to the issue/ judge wisely when cats come at you and be ready when cats ask you...//
Hook: Why should I believe you? how do I know what you preach is true?/ can you prove that you speak the truth?/ is your leader misleading you?/ or do you follow your heart like the rest of the heathens do?// what's you proof? Christians hold your whistle (hold your whistle)/ blow it when you know it's not official (not official)/ God's word and authority are the issue (the issue)/ if God said it, than he'll prove it's true, yo//
verse 2: By His Spirit we have liberty/ to behold as in a glass openly God's glory/ and we grow in maturity/ takin' responsibility, preachin' in His authority// 'cause if we teach God's law but God isn't mentioned/ the listener will think it's opinion/ then one of two things happen/ do you remember the first half of the hook that I was rappin'?// Well that's one of 'em 'cause your argument means nothin'/ until you can prove it with somethin'/ number two is, self righteousness/ through obedience, the dead works of the religious// heads gotta know God said so then serve Him/ not just be a good person/ the heathens can't please Him by goin' through the motions when they don't believe Him// Next subject, some heads like to do the opposite:/ sayin' "God said..." when He didn't/ it's what we call a false prophet/ the type Deuteronomy Thirteen says to throw rocks at// But now-a-days there's grace and/ they can repent, or wait for God's condemnation/ And like I said before, there's a way to make sure/ it's a prophet or, impersonator// the word had to come to pass/ plus line up with the Word of God preached in the past/ miracles might confirm it/ but false prophets did miracles too, you really can't discern with it// So we're left with the text:/ the scriptures with which we put prophets to the test/ So if you like to come at dudes/ and you speak truth, then respect when they ask you...//
Hook
verse 3: Yo, I ain't done yet, but I will be/ when I give proof so I don't speak hypocritically/ A lot of y'all should be askin':/ "where's your proof? Where did you say that you get your facts from?"// You want proof read Hebrews five, six, and eleven/ and do a lot of cross reference/ that proves about half of the first verse/ that was simple, the next half gets worse// second Timothy three: sixteen plus/ second Peter one: nineteen still not enough/ first Corinthians two, verse ten through/ sixteen, Psalm eighty two, then Matthew// last chapter/ verse eighteen through twenty, next seventeen: eleven in Acts bruh/ Peter three: fifteen, it's the first one/ with that we can consider the first verse done// So let's go to the next one/ second Corinthians three: sixteen through four: seven/ then here's a little bit of trivia/ Psalm one eighteen (118): eight: the middle verse of the scripture(s)// then go back to, Hebrews eleven: six/ and Deuteronomy, I already mentioned it/ chapter Thirteen in case you forgot/ first Thessalonians five: twenty one, done Ak// If you think that I'm wrong/ or I left anything out hit me at redeemedthought.com/ I've been wrong before, and I'm sure/ it's not the last time, there's going to be many more// So I'm pleased when I'm seein'/ cats who reason, from the text, gettin' checked by Bereans/ So I should be happy/ when I step off stage and cats ask me...//

My Sins, My Sins

My Sins, My Sins -

My Savior By Steve CampMy sins, my sins, my Saviour! They daily battle me,
Deaf and dumb Thy servant is, save only Christ to Thee;
In Thee is all forgiveness, fully free abundant grace,
I find my hope and refuge, in Thine unchanging face

My sins, my sins, my Saviour! How great on Thee they fall;
Seen through Thy patient mercy, I ought forsake them all;T
heir penalty's forgiven; yet their power suffers me
Their shame and guilt and anguish, they laid, my Lord, on Thee

My sins, my sins, my Saviour! What cost to Thee ensued
Thy heel bruised in temptation, no Devil could subdue
Thou wrestled in the garden; and prayed the Cup would pass
Thy sanguine sweat, Thou trembled yet, embraced His will at last

My sins, my sins, my Saviour! Thou perfect Sacrifice
Drained wrath's chalice to the dregs; Thy Father satisfied.
O Holy Lamb of Glory, High Priest, Lord God and King
We worship Thee with reverence, Thy matchless Name we sing

My songs, my songs, my Saviour! No grandeur theme shall know
They'll trumpet of Thy glory, to wretched man below;
Thy righteousness, Thy favor, stream from Thy throne above
Sustain the hearts my Saviour that Thou hast lavished with Thy love

Praise Be to God for His Grace and Mercy

To Friends, Family and Followers.

Life at the Honor Academy has been very interesting.

This weekend we had the Fasting LTE, (for those of you who don't know LTE stands for Life Transforming Event.) and wow I have never had a fast like that before. This is my third year here at the Honor Academy and my fifth Fasting LTE, two fasts a year, for you math majors out there. Now here is the trippy part of our LTE, a man came in and lead us in something called "guided imagery". I had never done guided imagery before and to this have not participated in guided imagery. We were instructed to lay on the floor, breath cleansing breathes (in the noes out the mouth) and relax. He then hopped on the mic and lead us through mental gymnastics which included, a flying magic carpet, colored body parts, the true and false self, a hall with Jesus in it and doors with our past hurts behind them. I don't know if any of you have ever heard of such a thing...but as of right now, I'm not down with it. I was told it was a processing technique and some people process better this way. Yet, I still don't know what I think. I don't know why any Christian should lay on the ground and breath cleansing breathes. There is no real Biblical basis for why we should do it. I'm glad I did not do it, and I don't plan on ever doing it. ah! I feel like it's some mystic, new age activity done under the name of the Holy Spirit. My conscience wont let me do it, and I'll walk in that.

Not only did that happen, but there was more. In one of the "worship" services we had, the crowed broke out in laughter. And a voice came from the pulpit "Let's read Bible verses and laugh."...what a miss use of God's Word. Are you joking me!! "Let's read Bible verses and laugh." That's the biggest twisting and degrading use of Scripture I have ever seen live. Where is the Fear of the Lord? Where is a love for God's truth? It's gone, evaporated with their hermeneutics, discernment and understanding of Scripture. I pray that we can always see the truth, follow it and be lead by the Lord and His voice.

Some good did come of the weekend. I was able to do a lot of personal study and Bible reading. The Lord is good.

That's my update for now...

Speaking In Tongues

Hello Friends and Family,
This last week have I been visiting and listening to and reading articles from http://www.salvationbygrace.org/ If you want to visit you can click this link or, under my website list you can click "Salvation by Grace". This was the last article I read and it's on speaking in tongues. This is a hot button topic within Christanity now a days and it's important to know the truth of what the Bible truly teaches.
I would suggest you read this article, and leaving me your comments, thoughts and even check out the website. Being here at the Honor Academy many people have lots of different thoughts, opinions, and experiences when it comes to speaking in tongues as I'm sure you do as well. People like to ask me my thoughts on it, and like to go back and forth about what truly speaking in tongues is. We read the Bible and talk about the verses and most of the time both of us learn and grow and it's great!
But let's check out Mr. McClarty and what he says about it. Someone asked him the question and that is presented by the "Q-" and then he goes on to answer it where it says "Jim-"
Speaking In Tongues
Q -
I have a question for you. I have been tempted to visit this fairly large (actually huge) Church of God. I bet there at least 1,000 or 2,000 (if not more) members - which I think is too large, people get lost in the crowd. In any event, my problem with the Church of God is the speaking in tongues thing. What are your thoughts on the subject? I'm sure you must have addressed this at some point. Any guidance or thoughts? I would like to know your perspective on this.
Jim -
So, speaking in tongues, eh? I do have an opinion (as you might expect). I've been asked about it frequently because there's plenty of confusion out there. But, there doesn't need to be.
The Greek word that is translated "tongues" is "glossa" - from which we get the English word "glossary." It should have been translated "language," but during the days of King James (1611) the word "tongue" was synonymous with "language." For instance, we still talk about people who speak a "foreign tongue." And, that's the way the word is used in the Bible. It means, "spoken language."
Now, the first place where the phenomenon of men speaking in languages they didn't naturally speak was on the day of Pentecost, at the inception of the Church. Peter stood up to speak, but his audience was filled with Jews from all over the middle Asia area, who spoke a variety of languages and dialects.
"And, they (the apostles) were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language." (Acts 2:4-6)
What should be instantly obvious from that passage was that the apostles spoke actual foreign languages in order that the multitude could all understand. That's what "tongues" was all about and what the purpose was. Without the methods and means of mass communication that we have available today, every area developed languages and dialects unique to themselves. But, when the time came for the Gospel of Christ to be spread abroad, the message was carried by fishermen, tax collectors, zealots and the like who spoke Greek and some Aramaic.
"And they (the men from every nation) were amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappodocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. And, they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?" (Acts 2:7-12)
So, God miraculously caused the Apostles to speak languages that were unknown to them and caused the listeners to hear in their own language. And, the gospel of grace spread. But again, it's obvious that the "tongues" spoken by the Apostles were known, definable languages, not babble or gibberish.
As Paul journeyed through his ministry, he encountered many languages and preached nonetheless. As the Church grew, the gifts of the Spirit spread in order to promote the message of grace. But, some began to abuse the gifts and Paul had to correct them -
"I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all; yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue." (1 Cor.14:19-20)
Paul went on to instruct the Corinthian church that tongues were not to be exercised in the church meetings. The gift of tongues was a method for preaching and evangelizing among the lost. But, the church was to gather for the purpose of reading, studying, preaching and exhorting
through the Word.
"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not; but prophesying [preaching the word] serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?" (1 Cor. 14:22-23)
So, Paul was quite clear that speaking with tongues - other known, spoken, extant languages of the day - was for a sign to unbelievers and not something to be exhibited in the church. In the church, preaching and teaching are the priority.
Now, when most people think of "speaking in tongues" they mean the sort of ecstatic utterances that we see on TBN or in Assembly of God churches. The people who exercise that sort of activity call themselves "Pentecostal" to connect themselves with the gifts that appeared at the first Pentecost. Or, they are known as "Charismatic" from the Greek word for gifts of the Spirit - "charis." That word is also translated "grace" in many passages.
There is no evidence in Scripture that any of the apostles or early church members ever broke into fits of uncontrolled verbiage and noises. When the Spirit spoke through the Apostles, it spoke a language known by the hearers for the purpose of advancing the gospel message.
The primary verse that the proponents of ecstatic utterance use is from 1 Corinthians 13:1. It's the beginning of Paul's great treatise on love and charity. From the context it's clear that Paul is speaking in hyperbole, overstating his case, in order to prove that charitable love is the greatest Christian virtue.
It reads - "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And, though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And, though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing." (1 Cor. 1-3)
Obviously, Paul was saying that even if he had every spiritual gift to the maximum but failed in charity, it was all pointless. But, at the top of his list he used the term "the tongues...of angels." And, that did it. People have grabbed hold of that phrase and claim that their verbal recitations of noises and unknown, unrecognizable words are "the tongues of angels." But, any honest reader of Paul's words can see that Paul was not promoting the idea that angelic languages were suddenly available to mankind. He was saying that even if he spoke every language known among men and angels - a clear case of hyperbole - without Christian charity the sounds he made would sound like horns and cymbals.
Lastly, there's considerable debate in the church-at-large about whether the gifts of the Spirit that are in evidence in the New Testament are available to us today. But, since we haven't seen any people raised from the dead, blind eyes opened, or lepers completely healed, I think it's hard to make the favorable case. Likewise, the ability to speak fluently in languages you've never studied was a necessary gift to get the Church of the ground and begin spreading the Good News. But, there is practically no language or corner of the known world where the message has not been spread. And, Bibles are printed daily in new languages and dialects. So, the necessity of "speaking in tongues" has waned.
Now, can God make men speak other languages if He wants to? Sure. But, it's up to Him. Even at Pentecost, the Apostles were not going through the gyrations and techniques advocated by modern Pentecostals in order to stimulate tongue-talking. In fact, they weren't expecting it at all. God simply spoke through them by His Spirit and they spoke languages that were unknown to them, but known to their listeners. And, they all glorified God as a result.
As far large churches uniting around tongue-talking, it does happen. Nothing unites people faster than a common experience. Like veterans getting together years after a war, they have a lasting bond because of the experience they shared. So, in order to build large congregations, many Pentecostal denominations insist that the only proof of the Spirit being in you - proof positive of your salvation - is that you talk in tongues. To be fair, many of them have backed off that position, seeing that it's unscriptural, but there is still an undue emphasis on tongues in those churches.
There's more to say, and Paul instructed the Corinthian church about how to keep from letting tongue-talking get out of control in their meetings, but I think this is a fair overview. As for me, I'm just a stickler for the Word and I try to adjust our theology and our worship accordingly.
Hope it helps.
Yours for His sake,
Jim McClarty

Graduation is almost here...

not my graduation but the graduation of the January class that is!

If you did not know, inside the Honor Academy there are two different classes. One is my class the "August" class, second is the "January" class. The names are given depending on which month you show up. Even though I'm not graduation there is some significance to this graduation. Melonie (the girl in the picture with me) my girlfriend will be graduating and leaving the Honor Academy. She is going back to Cali to get a job and start going to college. She loves college and can not wait to jump back into it. So that is a pretty major thing for us, it was a hard choice, because she could have stayed until August and graduate with me; however she decided that her leaving in Jan would be the best. I stand with her on this choice, while it's going to be hard to see her leave, in the end I know God has a plan and I trust Him! : )

Alumni weekend is happening this weekend! That means every person who has ever graduated the HA is invited to come back to campus and visit. It's an exciting time and I'm really looking forward to seeing men from my core last year. Some will be back on campus, I love them a lot and have missed them greatly.

That is a quick update. Also wanted to let you know I'm currently writing an article on "Eternal Life" that I hope to post in a week or two, so look forward to that!

Thanks for the comments, again please feel free to share this site with any other family or friends!
